@MargueriteSu, @WernerFink, @fstrba, @ftake, @hillwood, @swyear, @tiwai, could someone please look at this request? Standa (@sbrabec) is on a long leave.

Does this work? AFAICS from installed tmac/mdoc/doc-common

.\"     @(#)doc-common  8.1 (Berkeley) 06/08/93
.\"
.\" This is a generated file, created by 'tmac/strip.sed' in groff's
.\" source distribution from a file having '-u' appended to its name.

Not sure what do you mean by 'work', but while installed this change on my tumbleweed system I get:

~[0]> man ssh | head -n1 SSH(1) openSUSE Tumbleweed General Commands Manual SSH(1) ~[0]> man ssh | tail -n1 openSUSE Tumbleweed February 6, 2022 openSUSE Tumbleweed ~[0]>

in the sense of requirements in the bug I claim to be fixed by the change. Any other proposal request is welcome, as I don't have wide background here.

Please can you check the result of

man 1p man | head -n1
man 1p man | tail -n1
man 7mp man | head -n1
man 7mp man | tail -n1
man tcsh | tail -n1

MAN(1P) POSIX Programmer's Manual MAN(1P) IEEE/The Open Group 2017 MAN(1P) MAN(7) Linux Programmer's Manual MAN(7) Linux 2021-03-22 MAN(7) Astron 6.24.02 November 24, 2022 Astron 6.24.02

So no BSD string there. Note that I am changing doc-common-u, not doc-common file.

at build time a dummy release package may be used. this stuff needs evaluation at run time or explicit setting.
