Many thanks for looking into this issue. Looks great, except perhaps you would want to remove the
|| (cat doc/api/latex/*.log ; false)that seems to be there purely for debugging needs, if I am not mistaken. If it is indeed needed, I will ack it as is.Unfortunately the upstream Makefile redirects any tex output away from the console, which makes finding errors quite complicated (as you probably have seen).
Next time it fails the error message will be part of the regular build log.
This is similar to e.g. mangling of CMAKE_VERBOSE_MAKEFILE in the %cmake macro.
