The git >= 1.6.1 requirements comes from the upstream spec file, but I cannot find any other reference to requiring at least that version. Maybe it uses a feature that only ships from then on in git. But okay, we'll see :) -- note that the BuildRequires:git was there to make sure that git is available in the repository where etckeeper builds (fail fast).
