Why is explicit requirement on jack being introduced?

... No it is correct: scsynth and supernova need the jack server to run (scide starts it if wished) but jackd has to be installed and jackd is provided by jack.

If jack is not installed you will get errors like this one: could not initialize audio. RESULT = 0 ERROR: server failed to start

x64 patch was missing a line fixed that will supersede this request with the fixed version. For testing you can open scide then start the server (Language -> Boot server (or ctrl + B)), open an example (e.g. /usr/share/SuperCollider/examples/pieces/acid_otophilia.scd) and then Language -> Evaluate file.
