Group lines are no longer mandatory so it is maintainer discretion to keep them or not.

Well what about the "distro maintainer"? Basically your argument sucks balls it's like "I'll add Conflicts: aaa_base because I'm the package maintainer".

Tomáš Chvátal's avatar

Group lines are not mandatory and does not affect any UI relative to the user. If you want them you can keep them on your software but you can't force others to do so.

That is a lie. Tools that show these groups, such as rpm-catalog, are affected by the change.

The Release Manager (me) does not object to the Group: tags being dropped

Jan Engelhardt's avatar

Surely there are ought to be more people than just you (just think of the so-called "bus factor") that have some say in where the distro is going...

Jan Engelhardt's avatar

I have never really seen a formal process where that was... "decided". Not that there's a lot of process in openSUSE anyway. But judging from the wiki page https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Specfile_guidelines , there are two minute mentions of the Group tag, one of which suggests it must be used (near "Documentation").

And why is the removal of the Group field not mentioned in the changelog? Such changes should always be documented, it's a single sentence to add for every package where that change happens.
