I wonder, why do you want to drop the _service file? I guess it's a common practice to have the service files to support local updates even though the services are actually disabled for a submission which should end up in openSUSE:Factory

I do like _service files. But I did not demand it in this specific case.

I think it is fine to stick with release tags. In the past the master branch was the only usable source.
