IIRC, there have been some issues between Liberation v1.x and v2.x fonts, and we used to have liberation2-fonts package in the past (which was dropped again). I forgot the details, though...
liberation2 was dropped because it arguably was unmaintained (says
osc log -D
); but just 2 months after the openSUSE drop, there was a new release via git tag, so … oh wellConcerning rendering with freetype bytecode interpreter mode 40: When hinting is disabled, L1 and L2 look the same. When hinting is on "full", there is a difference. L2 corrected the (hinted) capheight of letters like 'E' and 'M' to be aligned with lowercase letters like 'i' and 'l'. The vertices for 'E' did not change in position, so it's a hinting change only. L2's E glyph looks same in v35/v40. L1's E glyph looks different in v35/v40. The fact that the change on E's hints occurred suggests the author is targeting v40.
v40 is openSUSE's default, so we should take the update.
Anything else I would argue is a debate between the creator and freetype's v40 hinter.
