Statistics Collection Daemon for filling RRD Files

collectd is a daemon (written in C) that reads various system
statistics and updates RRD files. Statistics are very fine grained
with an update interval of 10 seconds.

Why is the systemd service not run under a lowprivileged user?

It is hardened by systemd: harden_collectd.service.patch In normal life you have to override this restrictions to enable specific plugins such as ping or smart.
