Subject: [PATCH 1/2] Modernize build files

Some of the constructs used in the configure script and Makefiles
are a bit outdated, e.g. use of '$(mkinstalldirs)' instead of
'$(MKDIR_P)'. Change these old constructs to their modern counterparts.
