Source-highlight reads source language specifications dynamically, thus it can
be easily extended (without recompiling the sources) for handling new
languages. It also reads output format specifications dynamically, and thus it
can be easily extended (without recompiling the sources) for handling new
output formats. The syntax for these specifications is quite easy (take a look
at the manual).

With strace, you can trace the activity of a program. Information
about any system calls the program makes and the signals it receives
and processes can be seen. Child processes can also be tracked.

The Virtual USB Analyzer is a free and open source tool for visualizing
logs of USB packets, from hardware or software USB sniffer tools. The
Virtual USB Analyzer is not itself a USB sniffer tool. It is just a user
interface for visualizing logs.

wodim is used to record data or audio CDs on a CD-Recorder or to write
DVD media on a DVD-Recorder.

VNC is a set of programs using the RFB (Remote Frame Buffer) protocol.
They are designed to "export" a frame buffer via the network. It is in
wide use for administration.

X.org has a virtual Xvnc server which you can start as an own screen
(e.g. :1) and connect to with a VNC client (e.g. vncviewer from
tightvnc). This package contains the x11vnc binary that allows you to
export a screen of a running non-virtual X11 server. x11vnc has been
split off LibVNCServer on 2007-07-16.

xclip is a command line interface to the X11 clipboard. It can also be used
for copying files, as an alternative to sftp/scp, thus avoiding password
prompts when X11 forwarding has already been setup.

Xdelta3 is a set of tools designed to compute changes between binary files. These changes (delta files) are similar to the output of the "diff" program, in that they may be used to store and transmit only the changes between files. The "delta files" that Xdelta3 manages are stored in RFC3284 (VCDIFF) format.

Yate is a next-generation telephony engine. While currently focused on Voice
over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and PSTN, its power lies in its ability to be
easily extended. Voice, video, data and instant messenging can all be unified
under Yate's flexible routing engine, maximizing communications efficiency and
minimizing infrastructure costs for businesses.

aria2 is a utility for downloading files. It has completely new design
concept from its predecessor, Aria, and is written from scratch. aria2 has
a segmented downloading engine in its core. It can download one file from
multiple URLs or multiple connections from one URL. This results in very
high speed downloading, much faster than ordinary browsers. This engine in
was implemented in a single-thread model. The architecture is clean and easy
to extend.

aria2 currently supports HTTP, FTP, and BitTorrent.

blktrace is a block layer IO tracing mechanism which provides detailed
information about request queue operations up to user space. This is
valuable for diagnosing and fixing performance or application problems
relating to block layer io.

Bonnie is a popular performance benchmark that targets various aspects
of Unix file systems.

Bpython is an enhanced Python interactive interpreter that uses curses
and provides the following main features: in-line syntax highlighting;
readline-like autocompletion with suggestions displayed as you type; expected
argument specification for functions; a handy pastebin function to quickly
submit your code and return a URL. Its goal is to bring together a few handy
ideas to enhance the standard interpreter without getting carried away.

c_count counts lines, statements, and other simple measures of C/C++/Java
source programs. It is not lex/yacc based, and is easily portable to a variety
of systems.

collectd is a small daemon written in C for performance. It reads various
system statistics and updates RRD files, creating them if necessary.
Since the daemon doesn't need to startup every time it wants to update the
files it's very fast and easy on the system. Also, the statistics are very
fine grained since the files are updated every 10 seconds.

Conky is an advanced, highly configurable system monitor for X.

Deltafs combines a read-only lower directory and a read-write upper
directory into a new filesystem. Currently it works very similarly to
a union filesystem, where upon modification whole files are copied up
to the upper layer. There are plans to store differences more
efficiently in the future.
