tcptrack is a packet sniffer, which passively watches for connections on a specified network interface, tracks their states, and lists them in a manner similar to the Unix 'top' command. It displays source and destination addresses and ports, connection state, idle time, and bandwidth usage.

TCPWatch is a utility written in Python that lets you monitor forwarded TCP
connections or HTTP proxy connections. It displays the sessions in a window
with a history of past connections. It is useful for developing and debugging
protocol implementations and web services.

Noooo, not another Twitter client! Yes, another Twitter client. The difference
here is that you're dealing with a multi-functional, fully 100% text, Perl
command line client.

* In interactive mode, it is a fully interactive client with asynchronous
background updates and commands. Use it over telnet, ssh or even a dummy
terminal. Supports ANSI colour, UTF-8, hashtags and Twitter Search!
* Works within your favourite environment: modify prompt and input methods for
many popular window and session managers, or use a compatible readline
library. Or don't: basic editing and screen management features built-in.
* From the command line, use it to update your Twitter in shell scripts, from
cron, and so on.
* Notification support with Growl and libnotify (and extendable to others via
the API).
* Security: Supports Twitter OAuth and HTTP Basic Authentication, and SSL where
supported by your user agent.
* Supports Twitter-alike APIs such as StatusNet and Identi.ca.
* Supports standard timelines and automatically fetches direct messages, and
optionally replies/mentions, and runs queries against the Search API and
incorporates them into your timeline as well.
* Write and use your own custom extensions!
* Run detached in -daemon mode, and make your own Twitter bot!

A very simple perl program that allows for posting to twitter, and reading your
friends_timeline from twitter. It can initiate follow messages, and it can send
direct messages.

UDPCast allows to send data simultaneously to many destinations on a local net. This can for instance be used to install entire classrooms of PCs at once. The advantage over using other methods (nfs, ftp, whatever) is that udpcast uses Ethernet's multicast abilities: it won't take longer to install 15 machines than it would to install 2. The tool comes with a busybox bootdisk for easy loading of the tool. However, udpcast can also be started from the command line of an already installed system, and can be used for other purposes than just system installation.

I guess everybody with a laptop has experienced this problem at some point: You plug into a network and just want to exchange files with other participants. It always is a pain until you can exchange files with the person vis-a-vis.

Woof (Web Offer One File) tries a different approach. It assumes that everybody has a web-browser or a commandline web-client installed. Woof is a small simple stupid webserver that can easily be invoked on a single file. Your partner can access the file with tools he trusts (e.g. wget). No need to enter passwords on keyboards where you don't know about keyboard sniffers, no need to start a huge lot of infrastructure, just do a "woof filename" and tell the recipient the URL woof spits out. When he got that file, woof will quit and everything is done.
And when someone wants to send you a file, woof has a switch to offer itself, so he can get woof and offer a file to you.

aria2 is a utility for downloading files. It has completely new design
concept from its predecessor, Aria, and is written from scratch. aria2 has
a segmented downloading engine in its core. It can download one file from
multiple URLs or multiple connections from one URL. This results in very
high speed downloading, much faster than ordinary browsers. This engine in
was implemented in a single-thread model. The architecture is clean and easy
to extend.

aria2 currently supports HTTP, FTP, and BitTorrent.

relating to block layer io.

bpython is an enhanced Python interactive interpreter that uses curses
and provides the following main features: in-line syntax highlighting;
readline-like autocompletion with suggestions displayed as you type; expected
argument specification for functions; a handy pastebin function to quickly
submit your code and return a URL. Its goal is to bring together a few handy
ideas to enhance the standard interpreter without getting carried away.

Duplicity incrementally backs up files and directories by encrypting
tar-format volumes with GnuPG and uploading them to a remote (or local)
file server. In theory many remote backends are possible; right now
local, ssh/scp, ftp, rsync, HSI, WebDAV, and Amazon S3 backends are
written.

Because duplicity uses librsync, the incremental archives are space
efficient and only record the parts of files that have changed since
the last backup. Currently duplicity supports deleted files, full unix
permissions, directories, symbolic links, fifos, etc., but not hard
links.
