The goal of Gajim is to provide a full featured and easy to use Jabber/XMPP client. Gajim works nicely with MATE and GNOME, but does require neither to run.

You might want to update gajim-plugins-omemo too, since Gajim version changes can break plugins. Make sure to pick the correct development branch:
