mysqld doesn't have '--group' option http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/server-options.html while it is ignored in normal run and for 5.6, with 5.7 it breaks in upgrade (mysql_upgrade()), it ends with 2017-01-04T03:54:13.426479Z 0 [ERROR] unknown variable 'group=mysql' 2017-01-04T03:54:13.426481Z 0 [ERROR] Aborting in /var/tmp/mysql-protected.gFdMlx/log_upgrade_run.err then systemd restarts server many times and server get stuck p.s. this issue I have only with 5.7 (after updating from 5.6 near month ago)
