# Tumbleweed Performance Repository

> A personal, performance-oriented package repository for **openSUSE Tumbleweed**.
> Built for reproducible packaging, minimal external dependencies, and rolling-release stability.

**Target:** openSUSE Tumbleweed · **Arch:** x86_64 (Zen 4) · **Build:** Open Build Service · **Status:** Active

---

## Overview

This repository provides **custom-built and repackaged software** that is either missing from the
official openSUSE repositories, unsuitable in its stock form, or better served by a build tuned to
modern hardware.

Every package is maintained with the same three priorities:

| Priority | What it means in practice |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Performance** | Compiler flags, runtime tuning, and sane defaults aimed at desktop responsiveness. |
| **Reproducibility** | Deterministic spec files, pinned sources, verifiable upstream tarballs or RPM bases. |
| **Low fragmentation** | Only ship what genuinely needs shipping — nothing duplicated from OSS/Non-OSS. |

**Primary target hardware:** AMD Ryzen 7 7700 (Zen 4) — builds are validated on real silicon,
not just in a chroot.

---

## Scope

This repository deliberately stays narrow. It exists to fill gaps, not to mirror the world.

- **Missing packages** — software absent from the official openSUSE repositories.
- **Unsuitable packages** — official builds that lack required features, codecs, or backends.
- **Optimized builds** — upstream sources compiled with tuning appropriate to modern x86-64 CPUs.
- **Repackaged binaries** — vendor-supplied artifacts wrapped into clean, upgrade-safe RPMs.

Anything the official repositories already ship well is **left alone**.

## Packages

### Kernel / System

| Package | Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| `kernel-xanmod-v3` | XanMod kernel built at the `v3` microarchitecture level (AVX2/BMI2). Lower latency, improved scheduler behaviour, desktop-tuned defaults. |

### Development / Runtime

| Package | Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| `android-studio` | JetBrains' Android IDE, packaged with correct desktop integration and dependency handling. |
| `waydroid` | Container-based Android runtime for Wayland sessions. |
| `winboat` | Windows application compatibility layer. |

### Networking / Internet

| Package | Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| `brave-browser` | Privacy-focused Chromium derivative, tracking the stable channel. |
| `cloudflare-warp` | Cloudflare's WARP client and daemon. |
| `firefox_dev_edition` | Firefox Developer Edition, maintained alongside system Firefox without conflict. |
| `telegram` | Official Telegram Desktop client. |
| `ayugram` | Feature-extended Telegram client (AyuGram fork). |

### Shell / CLI

| Package | Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| `zsh-syntax-highlighting` | Real-time command highlighting for Zsh, packaged for system-wide installation. |

### Desktop / Misc

| Package | Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| **KDE theming** | Plasma themes, icon sets, and configuration helpers. |
| **Utilities** | Small quality-of-life tools for day-to-day desktop work. |
| **Multimedia tools** | Codecs, encoders, and playback utilities that require non-default build flags. |

> The package list is indicative and evolves with the rolling release.

## Installation

Add the repository and install packages as you normally would:

```bash
# Add the repository (replace with the published base URL)
sudo zypper addrepo --refresh tumbleweed-performance
# Import the signing key if prompted
sudo zypper --gpg-auto-import-keys refresh
# Install a package
sudo zypper install kernel-xanmod-v3
```

### Priority and vendor switching

Packages here may intentionally shadow official ones (e.g. a kernel variant). To make the switch
explicit and prevent unintended downgrades:

```bash
# Give this repository a higher priority (lower number = higher priority)
sudo zypper modifyrepo --priority 90 tumbleweed-performance
# Allow vendor change for a single package
sudo zypper install --from tumbleweed-performance
```

Keep `zypper dup` clean by refreshing the repository before every distribution upgrade.

---

## Build Model

- **Platform:** Built on the **Open Build Service**, so every artifact carries a full build log.
- **Inputs:** Upstream source tarballs or verified RPM bases — never opaque binaries.
- **Triggers:** Automatic rebuilds whenever a dependency in the Tumbleweed snapshot changes.
- **Validation:** Installed and exercised on real hardware before publishing.

---

## Philosophy

1. **Minimal repository fragmentation.** A small, curated set beats a sprawling mirror.
2. **Predictable upgrades.** Rolling release should not mean rolling breakage.
3. **Performance where it matters.** Tuning is applied deliberately, not everywhere.
4. **Rolling-release awareness.** Spec files are reviewed against Tumbleweed snapshots regularly.

---

## Compatibility

| Item | Supported |
| :--- | :--- |
| Distribution | openSUSE Tumbleweed (rolling) |
| Architecture | `x86_64` |
| Tuning target | `x86-64-v3` (Zen 4 and equivalent) |
| Leap / Slowroll | Not supported |
| Other architectures | Not supported |

Packages built at the `v3` level require a CPU with AVX2 and BMI2. On older hardware,
substitute the official repository's equivalent package.

---

## Maintenance Status

**Active — continuously updated.**

- Repository refreshed alongside Tumbleweed snapshots.
- Security-relevant packages are prioritised.
- Breaking changes are noted in the repository changelog.

---

## Disclaimer

This is an **unofficial repository** maintained by a single individual.

- No guarantees are offered beyond the maintainer's own testing.
- No warranty, express or implied, is provided.
- Intended for users already comfortable with Tumbleweed, `zypper`, and repository management.
- You are responsible for your own system's stability.

If that sounds like the wrong trade-off for you, use the official repositories.

## License

Packaging metadata in this repository is provided as-is.
**Individual packages retain the licenses of their respective upstream projects.**
Consult each package's spec file and upstream for terms.
