Why this indirection and not just set name correctly to start with?
Because people are weird and don't know about %name... even though it's used all over the place after the %prep line ;-)
Afaik it was causing some issues with python singlespec or at least this is what @okurz said.
No, not really a problem. In python library packages I prefer to not repeat the name of the module without the "python-" prefix all over. For gitlint the cause is special because it should not bear that prefix so it's not really needed and equivalent to %name. I'm not "that" weird ;-)
