ok
is this backwards compatible?
As far as one can trust the history on https://github.com/openssl/openssl the new function for the autodetection test (SSL_CTX_new) and the function/macro to access ssl->ctx (SSL_get_SSL_CTX) have been there since SSLeay 0.8.1b (since almost 19 years).
So, I would say yes, it is backwards compatible.
for the next time please add a changes entry to the package. to do that you can use the "osc vc" command. I added one now based on your submitrequest message.

Thank you for that. I am not too experienced in contributing to OpenSUSE. I was acting according to http://openbuildservice.org/help/manuals/obs-beginners-guide/#sec.obsbg.uc.branchprj. Now I know it would have been better to use https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Build_Service_Collaboration as a guideline.
also will you upstream the patch or do you want us to take care of it?
I already created this PR https://github.com/dinhviethoa/libetpan/pull/284 and it is meanwhile accepted and merged into master.
