And this SR is only a workaround. libopenssl still has the bug.

The idea in general is that our packages if possible should use openssl backend if they have it available.

Building the package in my osc environment and also locally, it builds fine sometimes with --enable-openssl-backend, so it looks to me as a problem with the build environment. Using --disable-openssl-backend as upstream developers suggest builds fine always.

As I wrote in the bug: "This happens only inside KVM". So have you tried --vm-type=kvm?

I also reproduced the build error in the osc environment and locally so the problem did not look only related to kvm. I am trying to build it now using kvm but I'm not sure why I get an out of memory error.

Could you give it a try and confirm if its fixed?
