It is necessary. Some of the build scripts depend on python
. I am sure it can be removed, but my priority is to get more language binding working, esp python.

, do they? That seems odd to me, esp seeing that it only builds python3 modules (when enabled).
From a (very!) quick look at the build files, I don't see any python2 specific commands. Yes, there are a few scripts with #!/usr/bin/env python
hashbangs but they can be -- and should be -- replaced by #!/usr/bin/python3
instead.
Having a BuildRequires: python2
is no-go for new packages on openSUSE Factory, I am afraid.
I already said "I am sure it can be removed". And I this wont be going straight to Factory. There is more to be done, but this is a good save-point.
But if you insist that I put lipstick on this pig, I'll do it for you.
